Alfredo (Freddie) Martinez

October 3rd, 1926 - September 20th, 2017

Biography

Alfredo Freddie Martinez, age 90, a resident of Santa Fe, passed on September 20, 2017. He was born in Dulce, NM on October 3, 1926.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Martinez, granddaughters Lauren and Ashleigh Trujillo, parents Ben and Crucita Martinez, and brother Ben Martinez Jr.
He is survived by his daughters Judy Dantis (John), Jennifer Trujillo (Joe), and Linda Martinez (Tony), sons Danny Martinez (Robin) and Freddie Martinez Jr. (Debbie), brother Jake Martinez, several grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Freddie joined the Navy at 18 years of age. During WWII he served as a seaman, first class, aboard the escort carrier USS Saginaw Bay. He participated in action in Palau, Leyte, Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon his return home, he met and married Mary Benavidez on July 19, 1947 and together they had five children. He had a lengthy career in law enforcement, spanning decades with various agencies: Lieutenant with the New Mexico State Police, Assistant Chief of Police for the Santa Fe Police Department, Chief Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office, Chief of Narcotics and Investigations for the Attorney General’s Office, Deputy Director of the Alcohol Beverage Control. After retirement he worked for several years as a security officer for the State Capitol. In the late fifties, early sixties, Freddie also liked to sponsor boxing matches. His love of boxing started when he boxed during his stint in the Navy. He was also a businessman who owned real estate around Santa Fe and for a time, a local restaurant. Throughout most of his life Fred loved to maintain his properties, often doing a lot of the construction himself. His favorite past times, however, were reading and washing the dishes, where he ruled the kitchen sink! Most of all, his love for his family always showed through the support and guidance he gave to all of them.
Funeral mass will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Anne Catholic Church with burial at the National Cemetery at 1:30pm.

I remember your dad very well as a kind man. We lived in the apartments behind your house. My mom (Amalia Rivera Jasso) and your mom (Mary) were first cousin. You are all in our prayers.
