Gregory L. Mabry

Gregory Eady Mabry, the fourth son of Burnett Francis Mabry and Maureen Eady Mabry, baby brother of Mike, Jeff and Doug, left the planet on the weekend of September 23rd. His big heart finally gave out and allowed him to transcend this realm onto his next set of adventures.
Greg was born in Biloxi, Mississippi and had subsequently lived in Dallas, TX, St. Simons Island, GA and for the last fifty years, resided in the beautiful New Mexican communities of Ilano Quemado, Pilar, 2 Peaks and most recently, Tres Piedras. A man, who could quite literally do anything, built his homes cozy and booby-trapped. His many nephews and nieces, all of whom he loved with his whole heart, around the country from Hawaii, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, to Alabama, Pennsylvania and Florida, survive him. His family also included members of the Harvey Felsher family and the Junior Ferguson family, both of Biloxi. Loved by his family and all of his many friends, Greg was known for his size and strength, his great sense of humor and his willingness to help anyone… who deserved it. He was a lover of nature, camping, jokes, drinking and beautiful women, and known to his closest friends as a celebrated luckless fly fisherman that astounded them all. Greg was a poker player, horse trader extraordinaire, a boggle aficionado and collector of all things rusty, odd and wonderful. Greg enjoyed getting together with his friends outdoors and playing music on his guitars and mandolin. He was a noted natural bluegrass player and poet. He was overprotective of his nieces and scared their boyfriends as a hobby.
Greg’s colorful career began as a game warden, and he later pursued blackjack dealing in New Mexico, Las Vegas and Tonapah, Nevada. Always in search of a new adventure, he became a grip, gopher and chauffeur for the movie industry in New Mexico, and in that time got to drive John Travolta around. He worked for KOAT TV channel 7 and interviewed Jimmy Carter with his friend Candace O’Donnell. He helped prominent Taos artists including Larry Bell, and would transport and install his many gallery shows. Greg was a boxer and golden glove fighter that notably sparred three rounds with George Forman until he got his lights knocked out. He quit boxing shortly thereafter, as he was a gentle giant that didn’t want to hurt anyone. Greg was a shuttle driver for a local rafting company, video stringer and newsman for Channel 13 of Albuquerque and lastly the creator of his own quirky business- Peckerwood, which were his magnificent and mighty carved spiral wood columns. Greg also used his spare time to volunteer at the animal shelter walking dogs. And if you knew Greg, you definitely knew Burt, his shadow, his animal totem, his best friend- the scraggly tiny mutt that never left his side.

Greg will be missed by all of us, but the contributions and love he gave to each of us will be lasting and not forgotten.

A memorial service will be held at some point in the future, for friends to attend and share their memories.

Memorials to be donated to the Institute of Toxoplasmosis or the Shriner Hospital of Dallas, TX, in appreciation for all the care they have given one of Greg’s nephews for his lifelong battle with toxoplasmosis.
