Luther Holley

1943 - January 29th, 2019

Biography

Longtime Taos resident and business owner Luther Holley passed away Tuesday, January 29, 2019, following a long illness.

Mr. Holley was born in 1943, and grew up in Whittier, California, where he was an avid swimmer. He attended Long Beach State University, where he majored in business administration.

After two tours of duty in the infantry in Vietnam, in 1971 he decided to take some time off and go skiing. It was then that he discovered Taos. He became a ski instructor and managed the Sierra del Sol Condominiums in Taos Ski Valley. He also continued to swim, placing seventh in the U.S. Masters National Swimming competition. His weekly volleyball games drew a crowd of locals and fierce but friendly competition.

He started his own business, Holley Mechanical, and spent many years working as a mechanical contractor in the construction industry throughout Taos County.

He has never forgotten his fellow veterans and has contributed to many causes that aid them.

He is survived by his wife, Page Sullivan, and his daughter, Claire Holley. No services are planned at this time.

Dear Page, I am so sorry for your loss. Luther was a very special friend to me and many others. My professional relationship with him was special because of who he was and how he conducted his business. His work always made the houses I built so much better. He made me look good. I've always been impressed by how he continued to do work for home owners, and remain their friend, long after the construction was done. I was fortunate enough to see him on occasion these past several months, and am really glad that we both took those opportunities to reconnect.

Dear Page, I'm so sorry for your loss. I just wanted to share a little story about Luther with you. I've only met Luther Holley once. He came to the church where I work, Calvary Taos, to do a repair on a heating unit. While doing the repair he saw my husband teaching a little boy how to play the guitar. Luther's heart was touched as he saw the little boy learning to play. He complimented the boy on his new skills and had kind words for my husband who was teaching him and then -- he said he wasn't going to charge us for the repair! What a kind man with a generous heart. That is how I remember Luther.
God bless you and keep you Page.
