Robert F. Quick

June 29th, 1941 - January 10th, 2019

Biography

Robert F. Quick, known as Bob, died following a long, courageous and always gracious battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born June 29, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri. A quiet scholar Bob found inspiration from people who were interesting to him as well as books. Bob excelled in languages becoming fluent in German and using that to win a place at Monterey Bay Language Institute before being transferred to Berlin. Germany where he was a translator for the U.S. Army.
This time in Germany ignited his love for living abroad where he returned to Germany to teach English and eventually to Hangzhou, China to teach English and German while learning Mandarin and Cantonese. Because he was one of the first Americans in China, he was treated well but preferred riding his old fashioned bicycle from home to his job rather than their car and driver. He made many lifelong friends from his travels. After his epic journey to China, he wrote a guidebook for Americans travelling to China, while he decompressed, living with his sister Vicki on the family farm in Cleveland, MO. In the Spring of 1981, he settled in Santa Fe, where his family had been living since 1966, and he became a writer for the Santa Fe Reporter and then the Business Editor at the Santa Fe New Mexican for a few years later until his retirement in 2013. Bob is survived by his wife, of 36 years, Cynthia Vollmer, who stood with him at every stage of his journey. His parents, R. Frank Quick and Mary Catherine Quick, and sister Mary Patricia Jakobe Gallegos preceded him. In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his step mother, Alfredia Quick of Santa Fe, brother Kelly Quick and his wife Anne of Columbia, Missouri, sister Kay Quick of Cleveland, Missouri, sister Vicki Quick of Cleveland, Missouri, brother George Jakobe and his wife Michelle of Overland Park, Kansas, his sister Martha Quick of Santa Fe and brother Mark Quick and his wife Lori of Denver, as well as nephews Justin Quick, James Gallegos and Harrison Quick and nieces Hannah Quick and Sophia Quick and great nephews Austin and Ashton Quick.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Bob’s name to the Santa Fe Women’s Club and Library Association, the Santa Fe Public Library Foundation, the Santa Fe Food Depot, Kitchen Angels, or the Institute for American Indian Arts emergency fund. The family wishes to thank the incredible staff Angels at Sierra Vista who cared for Bob during his final days.
Services will be held at a later time.

I met the Quicks through my wife, who worked at the New Mexican. They also lived near my mother. Bob and I shared a love of German language/culture and Berlin. He even brought me a piece of the Wall. Deepest sympathy to the family. Ruhe im Frieden.
