Biography

THOMAS EDWARD MORIN JR.

It is with great sadness that the family of Thomas Edward Morin Jr., a long time resident of New Mexico, announces his passing away on Tuesday, August 22, 2017. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Jerri; his children Mollie Sara Givan (Tom), Marc Morin (Karen), and grandchildren Elsa Givan, Oliver Givan, Brady Morin and Ava Morin. His is preceded in death by his parents Anna and Thomas Morin and his brother Jim Morin. Tom was born in Malone, New York. He was a Master Sculptor who received his undergraduate degree from Massachusetts College of Art and his Masters from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Tom’s first sculpture show, at age 19, was at the Margret Brown Gallery in Boston. He was awarded a Fullbright Scholarship to study sculpture in Italy. Upon his return to the US he became an Associate Professor at Rode Island School of Design. Tom’s long and successful career, as a sculptor, educator, professor and Academic Dean, is archived at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. Upon retirement Tom settled in the village of Cerrillos, New Mexico where he lovingly restored an old adobe house and built his studio and gallery. He was intrigued by indigenous cultures; he and Jerri shared many adventures on their travels in Asia. Tom lived his life deliberately. He was an avid collector of folk art, a great dancer, and most of all he loved making memories ad telling stories. Tom had a passion for life; he was kind and generous and was forever curious. At the end of his memoirs he wrote, “I have lived the life I always dreamed I would have!” He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family will be having private services.

RISD sculptor: Sterett-Gittings Kelsey 1964. Dear ones, I want you to know that Tom was my teacher and made my life's work possible as a full time sculptor. It is my hope that one of his wonderful Negative carving sculptures will become a part of the Rhode Island School of Design's Museum Collection. With love to you and thank you to Tom. XOXO Sterett

Warm thoughts and deepest sympathy on Tom's passing. He was my uncle and remember him fondly, and had connected with him some time ago when he appeared on an HGTV show. Sorry to hear of Tom's passing. My love and thoughts go out to his entire family, especially his wife, Jerri (whom I never met) and his children (my cousins) Mollie and Marc. :-'(

Barbara Chatterjee published a tribute .

Over a number of years I visited Tom's studio in Cerrillos, always marveling at the beautiful pieces he created with those multi-hued sanding discs and belts. Eventually one came to live at my home where it overlooks all who pass down the inner hallway. To all of his family I send my deepest condolences for a man who probably entered the lives of many like myself who enjoyed meeting him and love his work, For sure he is deeply missed here too, and also lives on, Most sincerely Barbara Chatterjee

Saddened by this news. Tom and Jerri were the very first people I met in Cerrillos when I moved here. They both were so open and welcoming and dedicated time and talents to the Turquoise Trail Association and the community at large. I stopped in often if they were home as Tom's gallery was amazing! A life well lived. My condolences to Jerri and Family.
